Nebraska Life & Health Insurance Exam Guide

The complete, step-by-step walkthrough of everything required to get your Nebraska insurance producer license — pre-licensing rules, PSI exam breakdown, fees, state regulations, and study tips.

1. Getting Started

What This License Is

A Nebraska Resident Producer License for Life, Accident & Health authorizes you to legally solicit, negotiate, and sell individual and group life insurance, annuities, health insurance, disability income, Medicare supplements, and long-term care policies in Nebraska. The regulatory authority governing all producers is the Nebraska Department of Insurance (NDOI), headed by the Director of Insurance.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a Nebraska resident insurance producer license, an applicant must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be a resident of Nebraska.
  • Be competent, trustworthy, and of good business reputation.
  • Pass the official Nebraska insurance licensing examination administered by PSI Services LLC.
  • Submit a completed electronic application and pay the required fees via NIPR.

Pre-Licensing Education

Nebraska does not mandate classroom pre-licensing education hours prior to sitting for the exam. You are permitted to schedule and take the licensing exam directly. However, due to the comprehensive nature of the 150-question examination, rigorous independent study using realistic practice exams is highly recommended.

Background Checks & Character

All candidates must disclose any criminal history, administrative actions, or felony convictions during the NIPR electronic application. The NDOI evaluates all background disclosures to protect the public.

2. The Examination

Exam Options

Candidates in Nebraska can choose between taking a single combined exam or separate individual line exams:

Life-Only or Health-Only

75 Questions • 90 Minutes

What It Covers

The combined exam consists of 5 core sections weighted according to the NDOI exam blueprint:

Scheduling with PSI

Exams are scheduled online via the official PSI Nebraska Insurance Portal or by phone at (855) 746-8172. You can test at PSI testing centers across Nebraska (including Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, and North Platte) or via remote online proctoring.

Fees

  • Exam Fee: $63 per attempt, payable to PSI Services LLC.
  • License Application Fee: $50 paid to NDOI via NIPR.

In-Person vs. Remote Testing

PSI offers remote online proctoring as well as in-person testing centers. Remote test-takers require a private room, webcam, microphone, and a reliable internet connection. The exam format, passing standard, and fee are identical.

Exam Day Procedures

Arrive at the testing center at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. You must present two forms of valid, unexpired identification (one must be government-issued with a photo and signature). No personal belongings, phones, or notes are permitted in the exam room.

Passing Score

The passing score is 70%. On the combined 150-question exam, you must answer at least 105 questions correctly. You receive your pass/fail score report immediately upon submitting the exam.

3. After the Exam

If You Pass

PSI transmits your passing score report electronically to the NDOI within 24 to 48 hours. Once recorded, you can submit your official license application online via NIPR.

If You Fail

If you do not achieve a 70% passing score, you may reschedule your exam after a 24-hour waiting period. You must pay the $63 exam fee for each retake attempt. PSI provides a diagnostic breakdown by content section to guide your review.

Applying for Your License

Submit your resident producer application online at NIPR.com. Applications are typically processed by the NDOI within 3 to 5 business days. You can verify your active license on the NDOI website.

4. License Maintenance & Regulations

License Types & Lines

The Life, Accident & Health license authorizes lines of authority for Life insurance, Annuities, Accident, Health, and Disability insurance products.

Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

Nebraska requires resident producers to complete 24 hours of approved Continuing Education every two-year licensing cycle. Exactly 3 of the 24 hours must be in approved Ethics courses. Licenses expire biennially on the last day of the producer's birth month.

Insurer Appointments & Reporting

  • Insurer Appointment: An insurance company must file a notice of appointment with the Director within 15 days from the date the agency contract is executed or the first insurance application is submitted.
  • Appointment Termination: If an insurer terminates an appointment, it must notify the NDOI within 30 days.
  • Address Changes: Producers must notify the NDOI in writing within 30 days of any change in residential, business, or email address.
  • Administrative Actions: Producers must report any criminal convictions or administrative actions taken in another jurisdiction within 30 days.

5. Preparation & Study Advice

Recommended Study Strategy

Most successful candidates spend 20 to 35 hours of dedicated study over a 2- to 3-week window. Focus on taking simulated full-length practice exams under realistic timed conditions.

Common Nebraska Exam Traps

  • Title 210 NAC Replacement Rules: Forgetting the requirement to submit a Notice Regarding Replacement and provide a 30-day free-look on replacement contracts.
  • Guaranty Association Limits: Confusing the $300k life death benefit limit with the $100k life cash surrender and $250k annuity present value limits.
  • CE Deadlines: Forgetting that CE is due biennially on the last day of the producer birth month with 3 hours of ethics required.
